    We recommend that you begin your search by contacting the Air Force Historical Research Agency about the 711th Bomb Squadron of the 447th Bomb Group.  Unit histories and supporting documents of Army Air Force and Air Force units are in the custody of the Air Force Historical Research Agency, 600 Chennault Circle, Building 1405, Maxwell Air Force Base, AL 36112-6424.  These files often include historical reports.  You should call (334) 953-2395 or write to that office for further information concerning these records.     The National Archives at College Park has custody of the series World War II Combat Operations Reports, 1941–1946 (entry NM-6 7-A) within the Records of the Army Air Forces (Record Group 18). This series consists of mission reports, operations and field orders, statistical summaries, and narrative and intelligence reports of Army Air Forces combat units during World War II.  We were able to locate records for the 447th Bomb Group and for the 711th Bomb Squadron.
    We will be happy to make the records and their finding aids available to you or your representative in the Textual Research Room (Room 2000) here at the National Archives at College Park, Maryland.     Copies of most of the monthly rosters from 1912-43 and 1947-59 for Army units (including Army Air Corps) are in the custody of the National Archives in St. Louis, MO. Please contact them for access to these records. The address is the National Archives in St. Louis, 1 Archives Drive, St. Louis, MO  63138-1002 and the email address is stl.archives@nara.gov. Rosters for units serving in World War II from 1944-46 were destroyed in accordance with Army disposition authorities.
    Additional information on plane 42-97497 may be found in the aircraft history cards.  The National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution has custody of Air Force and Army Air Force aircraft history record cards. The cards list a plane's serial number, place of manufacture, and manufacturer's contract number, and may include information for each month that the plane was in service, the place of assignment, cumulative flying hours, and any repairs or accidents. They cover information from the date the plane was put into service to the date it was destroyed or withdrawn from service.
