We searched the National Archives Catalog and located the series Indexes to the Carded Records of Soldiers Who Served in Volunteer Organizations During the Civil War in the Records of the Adjutant General's Office, 1762 - 1917 (Record Group 94) that include/may include a file for George Hersom. Some of these records have been digitized and are available using the Catalog. First, check the Civil War Soldier and Sailor System, and you find a file for him:  https://www.nps.gov/civilwar/search-soldiers-detail.htm?soldierId=FC2213A8-DC7A-DF11-BF36-B8AC6F5D926A 

Then search within the series, like so:  https://catalog.archives.gov/search-within/654530?q=George%20Hersom  

You get one relevant result:  https://catalog.archives.gov/id/83342162 

Of course, that's only the index card.  What you really want is the file that this indexes.  

Per the Function Note:  This series was created to index the series "Carded Records Showing Military Service of Soldiers Who Fought in Volunteer Organizations During the Civil War, 1890-1912" (ARC Identifier 300398).

That citation takes you to here:  Carded Records Showing Military Service of Soldiers Who Fought in Volunteer Organizations During the American Civil War, 1890–1912.

Unfortunately, the full file for him is not yet online.


But wait, there's more!   Its a common newbie mistake to stop at the service records and go no further.  However, there may also be a pension record for him.  In fact, there is:

Willim Swan If you're doing genealogy, or any other sort of research for that matter, I'd suggest requesting both the CMSR and the Pension file when you email A1, and attaching these index cards when you contact them.  It will get you a lot more than just asking for the index file.
